Lighthouse at Marina Beach will be thrown open to the public from August

The Madras Lighthouse at Marina Beach will be thrown open to the public from August.

It was closed to the public in May 1991 due to security concerns after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. The 45.72-meter high structure has 10 floors and an elevator.
Visitors will be permitted to take the stairs or the elevator till the 9th floor, where the two sea-facing balconies provide a
Spectacular view of the Bay of Bengal. To make it safer for viewing, the railings on the balconies will be raised by another 4 feet. The Madras Lighthouse is the only one in the country within the city limits.

According to N. Ramadoss (Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships), Chennai’s first conventional lighthouse was built in 1796 on the terrace of the officer’s mess within what is now known as Fort Museum in Fort St. George. Fifty years later, the lighthouse equipment with lantern was shifted onto the dome of the High Court building. The Madras Lighthouse constructed at Marina Bea-ch, which uses electric bulbs, used in 1977.
